New York State Department of Health Announces Funding to Expand and Support Dental Care for Indigenous Nations
$2.5 Million in Funding to Support Recognized Indigenous Nations Through the New York State American Indian Health Program
The New York State Department of Health announces $2.5 million in funding to support and expand dental care for recognized Indigenous Nations through the New York State American Indian Health Program (AIHP), as well as Nation-designated health care providers currently contracted with the New York State Department of Health to provide medical care to Nation members.
"Dental care is foundational to good overall health and this funding announcement of $2.5 million supports our mission to lay the groundwork for equitable oral health care access among Tribal nations," State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. "As indigenous populations are historically underserved, I am personally invested in improving access to health care and health outcomes within these communities and this funding reaffirms our commitment to the nine Tribal Nations of New York State."
The New York State American Indian Health Program was awarded the $2.5 million Dental Care for Native American Funding beginning with the 2024-25 State Fiscal Year. Funding will continue for five years with a total value of $22.5 million and has been awarded to support services and expenses for dental care to members of recognized Nations within the state. The American Indian Health Program is responsible for providing access to medical care, dental care, preventive health services, and education for citizens of state recognized Tribal Nations having territory within New York State borders. Nine Tribal Nations are recognized by New York State and the New York State Department of Health remains committed to upholding its role in administering to the medical and health needs of Tribal Nation members.
